TrueTeX Release 4.1
Update Information for Windows 95, 98 and NT:
TrueTeX, the leading implementation of TeX for Windows, now gives you over 35
new features from our previous release.
The previous release provided three key components: a 32-bit native-Windows
TeX formatter, 114 scalable TrueType TeX fonts, and a powerful previewer and
printing application (see the Web page URL at the end of this text for
details).
Release 4.1 offers all the following new items, many of
which are available in no other TeX implementation:
- DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS 95, 98 AND NT:
TrueTeX provides the best Windows integration of any TeX implementation,
and this release improves Windows support with features like: all 32-bit
WIN32 code, long file names, Windows Registry configuration, Unicode-
enabled access to TrueType fonts, full interface to Windows print spooler,
and automatic installation for all Windows variants.
- FULL NETWORK SUPPORT:
Network-ready file access using either mapped drives or UNC's. Prints to
networked print servers. Multi-user licensees can run TrueTeX from a
server with per-user configurations, or provide a network-server master
copy for automatic per-workstation installation. Multiple-configuration
files or registry entries allow you to manage multiple projects or
multiple users without conflicts. Shares simultaneous file access between
applications on one workstation or across a network.
- VIRTUAL FONTS:
Exports TeX virtual fonts and TeX font metrics for any TrueType font or
(with Adobe Type Manager) Type 1 font. Uses flat and recursive virtual
fonts from standard TeX tools like fontinst. Automatically composes
accented characters and ligatures from incomplete fonts (you may extend
composition features with a composition language script). Supports over
40 font encodings for compatibility with TeX, ANSI, Unicode, and
multi-lingual variations. Displays font encoding samples for any font,
for all Unicode positions. A TrueType encoding editor allows you to
modify TrueType font encodings for TeX compatibility.
- LATEST LATEX2e FORMAT PRE-INSTALLED:
The automatic installation provides desktop icons ready to run the
latest version of basic LaTeX.
- RECURSIVE DIRECTORY SEARCHING:
Provides TDS (TeX Directory Structure) standard syntax for recursive
searching of input files, allowing you to organize your TeX documents and
macros into directory trees instead of single directories. (TDS directory
structures are required by an increasing number of LaTeX macro package
options.)
- DDE SERVER:
TrueTeX 4.1 provides Windows DDE service to your other applications,
allowing them to compile, preview, or print TeX documents without user
intervention. Developers use this feature to write Windows applications
that use TeX as a background engine to format and print reports.
- OMEGA SUPPORT:
Views Omega 16-bit DVI files. Supports Omega .xvf extended virtual
fonts, with access to up to 65,534 characters in each TrueType font.
Exports Omega .xvp virtual fonts for any TrueType or Type 1 font.
Optimizes storage for sparsely-encoded fonts.
- POSTSCRIPT GRAPHICS:
Previews and prints all three Adobe-standard encapsulated PostScript
standards (EPS, EPSF, EPSI). Prints on both PostScript and non-
PostScript devices using Microsoft POSTSCRIPT_PASSTHROUGH standard.
- QUIRING:
Steps and repeats N-up copies of TeX pages for printing labels
or quired books.
- ENHANCED \special HANDLING:
Improved interface for debugging user-written \special plug-in's. Faster
processing of lengthy \special's via memory-mapped file access and 32-bit
DLLs. WIN32 TIFF handler links to Image Library shareware, a 32-bit DLL
which supports the following bit-map image formats: Windows and OS/2 BMP,
JPEG, PC Paintbrush (PCX), TIFF, Targa, Photo CD, MacPaint, FBM, Sun
Raster, CMU WM Raster, Portable Bit Map (PBM, PGM, PPM), Faces Project,
Utah RLE, X Window Dump, McIDAS areafile, G3 FAX, GEM Bit, X Pixmap, and X
Bitmap.
- BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY:
Includes 16-bit edition of the previewer for Windows 3.1, allowing you to
preview and print in that operating environment. Some features are
necessarily limited or absent in 16-bit Windows.
- BUGS CORRECTED FROM RELEASE 4.0:
File names no longer omitted from formatter log files.
Recognizes all PostScript printers in WIN32 previewer.
Eliminates StartDoc error which could inhibit printing in Windows 95.
Corrects spurious cancellations of metric export process.
Recovers from missing font-substition files.
Correctly positions scroll buttons in WIN32 previewer.
Stops file handle leakage in recursive file opens.
