This kit will help you diagnose the no-flash condition of your digitally upgraded Topcon TRC-NW3 retinal camera.
Kit contents:
- Bayonet ring
- DB-9 flash test cable with pushbutton and hot-shoe connector
- Short jumper wire
Test procedure:
- Remove any camera attachment or camera adapter from Topcon TRC-NW3.
- Turn on Topcon TRC-NW3 power.
- Wait for Topcon "CHARGE" green LED to illuminate indicating Topcon flash is charged and ready.
- Insert bayonet ring into Topcon camera receptacle
Note that only one side of the bayonet ring will fit into the Topcon receptacle, which is the side with a notch in one of the bayonet ears.
Note slight click as the Topcon camera-present switch at 6 o'clock position in the receptacle is engaged.
- Lower the handle on the Topcon bayonet receptacle to lock the bayonet ring, as if attaching a camera.
- Connect test cable DB-9 connector to Topcon receptacle below camera receptacle.
- Press pushbutton on test cable, observe Topcon flash.
- If no flash, conclude that a problem is in the Topcon TRC-NW3.
- If flash, continue next step.
- While leaving the test cable connected to the Topcon TRC-NW3,
connect test cable hot-shoe connector to Canon digital SLR camera body, and turn the SLR camera on.
- Set SLR camera to manual "M" mode, 1/40 SEC exposure. SLR lens is not needed for test, but if lens is attached, set to MF (manual focus).
- Wait for Topcon "CHARGE" green LED to illuminate indicating Topcon flash is charged and ready.
- Press digital SLR shutter button to take a picture, observe Topcon flash.
- If no flash, conclude that a problem is in the SLR camera.
- If flash, continue next step.
- Remove bayonet ring and DB-9 test cable from Topcon TRC-NW3 and set both aside, as they will not be used further.
- Connect digital SLR adapter and digital SLR to Topcon TRC-NW3 as detailed in the adapter instructions.
- Press Topcon joystick button. If the digital camera takes no picture, conclude the problem is in the digital adapter or SLR camera.
If the digital camera takes a picture but no flash, continue next step.
- Remove just the adapter hot shoe connector from digital SLR, leaving the adapter and digital SLR attached to the Topcon instrument.
- Hold short jumper wire to connect the spring-loaded silver pin on the hot shoe connector to the copper conductors on the sides
of the hot shoe connector. While holding this wire, press Topcon joystick button and observe Topcon flash.
- If no flash, conclude that a problem is in the digital adapter or SLR camera.
- If flash, conclude that the problem is in the SLR camera.
